Early June saw us host VizIt Sydney, where almost 100 APAC DataFam came together to learn, connect, and get inspired. Thanks to our sponsors, Tableau/Salesforce, dbt Labs and Motta Consulting, and our amazing community, we were able to put on more than 20 community-led sessions at Salesforce Tower Sydney.
We didn’t record sessions (with one exception), but many of our presenters have since presented at the recently started DataFam Tableau User Group (TUG), among others. I’ve created this post to capture those in one place. Some are still to come, and I will update those once available.

How I used data visualisation to understand music

From Ludo – My journey of understanding music through the lens of data visualisation and mathematical patterns. I created my own version of a “music script language” with data visualisation best practices in mind. During this journey I realised I was on the receiving end of “user adoption gone wrong”, reflecting on the parallel to data visualisation projects.

Practical AI: Using large language models to unlock deeper insights

80% of data is unstructured (think: social media posts, documents, photos, and videos). This means 80% of data is locked off from traditional analysis, or prohibitively time consuming to process. That was until the recently. Large Language Models now provide a way to unlock this data quickly, and simply enough for anyone to build it into their workflows. Through a set of examples, I’ll show some ways I’ve used AI to enhance datasets for visualisation in Tableau.

How to drive Tableau dashboards with user inputs

While Tableau dashboards can mean many different things to different audience groups, there is a general consensus that they are primarily a read-only product without the ability to influence what we see by asserting user inputs on the fly. What if as a user, we desired to extrapolate based on user supplied variables directly in the dashboard or even build a hypothesis around what ifs by being able to make adjustments while reviewing the dashboard? In this presentation, Joon will demonstrate how we can achieve this capability by utilising some of our favourite Tableau features and with some creativity.
